Ladies and gentlemen, meet the National League East’s 2015 champions: your New York Mets. In one of the most dramatic late-season explosions in recent memory, the Amazins have stormed the baseball world and climbed the MLB power rankings.
The Mets have the ingredients to make this a postseason to remember. They have a Cinderella-story folk hero in Wilmer Flores. They have a handful of aces in Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz. They have the former “face of MLB” in captain David Wright, and with Lucas Duda and Yoenis Cespedes they have a lefty-righty pair of bone-crushing sluggers in the middle of their lineup. They have a ‘pure hitter’ type in Daniel Murphy. They have a dominant closer in Jeurys Familia. They have exciting rookie talent like Michael Conforto, and seasoned clubhouse-boosting veterans like Juan Uribe.
The Mets’ job is far from over. They’re still neck-and-neck with the Los Angeles Dodgers for home-field advantage in the National League Divisional Series. They also want to make sure their parts are acting in concert as they head into the playoffs.
But for now–if only for today–they celebrate. They’ve earned it.
